The Nurse Practitioner (0.4 FTE Thursdays & Fridays) at CUPS is a registered nurse, working in an expanded role with a community focus using concepts of primary health care in the care of women. Through collaboration with professionals and the community, the NP facilitates the provision of health care to people through health assessment, health education and health promotion. The NP works with individuals, families and the community to enhance the quality of life as the individual, family or community defines it.
Works interdependently with the other health care team members to provide nursing services in an extended practice context and provides advanced, comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Ordering diagnostic tests as required
Assessment of social and mental health supports and providing referrals to internal staff and external agencies
Assessment for disability eligibility including Income Assistance, AISH, EI Disability, CPP Disability, and private or 3rd party assessments, along with completing the required forms and documentation
Assists in the development of programs through partnerships with the community, based on needs expressed by health care providers and the community.
Participates in triage and facilitates referral to other services at CUPS. These may include referral(s) to a physician, Family Development Centre or Housing Department
Pediatric healthcare including developmental screens and providing anticipatory guidance
Complex case management and advocacy for clients
Chronic disease management
Facilitates the design and implementation of health education programs with staff and clients on a regular basis particularly prenatal education.
Participates in formal and informal health teaching including the preventative health concepts concerning health issues
Organizes continuing Education for clinic staff and volunteers, as well as clinical outreach opportunities to provide improved access to prenatal and Women’s Health Services
Research involvement including the composition and recruitment of subjects, data collection, and evaluation
Preceptors for NP and MD students, residents, and IMGs
Prescribing (including chronic/acute pain & Opioid Agonist Therapy)
Participates with other agencies in the provision of services to clients in the most acceptable and accessible manner possible.
Qualifications & Requirements
Registered Nurse with a Masters Degree
Member in good standing with the Extended Practice Roster of the Alberta Association of Registered Nurses
Experience in expanded practice environments
Knowledge of issues related to the socio-environmental determinants of health, in particular issues related to poverty, mental health, and addictions.
Ability to develop proposals and evaluate programs
