Heritage Day: celebrating the diversity of our community

Our province is a blend of different cultures and ethnicities and in Calgary alone, there are more than 200 ethnic origins. That diversity contributes to the strength of our community and is something to celebrate.

Celebrating diversity is not about simple tolerance; it’s about embracing and cherishing the beauty that emerges from blending cultures together. It enriches our lives personally, socially and globally.

We know that a society which embraces diversity is stronger and more resilient. When people feel accepted and valued for who they are, they are more likely to contribute positively to the community. We want to create a sense of belonging for all through an inclusive environment.

At CUPS, we interact daily with diverse backgrounds and it empowers us to grow stronger as an organization but also as a community. We know that through supporting those who are struggling, no matter their background, we can give them the tools and confidence to build a foundation for the future and achieve their personal goals.

We work from a space of collaboration and connection to ensure those who come to CUPS are linked to other organizations for support as well.

Some clients are referred to Immigrant Services Calgary, which helps more than 10,000 newcomers each year. Others are connected with the YWCA for support with upgrading and ESL (english as a second language). Translators help support clients to break down communication barriers, ensuring they understand programs, forms and more. CUPS also connects clients with the Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary. Between 31 and 39 per cent of CUPS clients identify as Indigenous. Every connection and collaboration is another way to create a pathway through our diverse community.

The foundation of celebrating diversity lies in understanding and empathizing with others’ experiences. When we take the time to listen and learn about someone’s culture, experience and background, we break down barriers and foster an environment of mutual respect. We are creating meaningful connections to create a more inclusive society. And that is something to celebrate.
